2016 Epic Road Trip - Day 77

Day 77

July 29, 2016

Haines, AK to Skagway, AK via Alaska Ferry

Today was a day of travel  - only about 14 miles as the crow flies, but I wasn't a crow, and there weren’t any direct roads from Haines to Skayway.
The Southeast Alaska State Fair was going on this weekend in Haines, just across the road from the campground.  Back a number of years ago, White Fang (Disney movie) was filmed in Haines.  They recreated a movie set on the fairgrounds.  Since I didn’t want to go into the fair and didn’t pay the admission fee, I could only take pictures from the outside, but you get the drift of the style of buildings.

Had breakfast at a little Thai restaurant and bakery.  Good food...just as I was walking out, in walks "Big Boot" and his sidekick from the TV show Gold Rush.

Then it was onto the Ferry, literally.  It held over 100 people and a dozen or so RVs and couple dozen cars.  A one-hour ride up the inter passage fjord to Skagway.  Scenery was beautiful and the mountains went right down to the water’s edge.

Toured around Skagway in the afternoon.  It’s architecture is from the gold rush era, mostly renovated.  Very fun little town with dozens of jewelry shops and other tourist shops.  The Carnival Cruise line was in town until it left port in the evening.

Had dinner at the Red Onion Saloon.  Upstairs, is the Brothel Museum---detailing its history from back in the gold rush days at the turn of the century.  Admission is charged for the tour:  $10 for 20 minutes, just like it was in 1898.
