6/4/2014 - Ely, NV to Baker, NV

63 miles

A relatively short day, there were only 2 significant climbs before the riders enjoyed a leisurely downhill into the town of Baker, NV.

Fun trivia fact...Baker, NV has 68 residents which makes it bigger than the City of London, England. The actual City of London is just 1 mile square and it is home to the financial district, so the only residents are the night watchmen, of which there are only 50.

Along the way I learned about the Ward Mining District and Taylor

At one of the roadside informational stops I saw this steel mailbox which I thought was quite unique

Major's Place in Majors Junction was the only sign of life on today's ride

I also learned about Osceola

The view and vistas were absolutely beautiful

It was quite a climb for the riders

I found this Ranching Exhibit just outside of Baker, NV on NV Route 488

This old abandoned car was just sitting in a field outside of Baker, NV

I went to Great Basin National Park. It was just beautiful. The view into the basin or valley was tremendous. I took the scenic drive to Mount Wheeler and stopped in the Visitors Center and watched the 24 minute movie. Very interesting and informative.

The Great Basin, This vast region of sagebrush-covered valleys and narrow mountain ranges is named for its lack of drainage. It's streams and rivers mostly find no outlet to the sea, and water collects in shallow salt lakes, marshes, and mud flats to evaporate in dry desert air. It is not just one but many basins, separated by mountain ranges from California's Sierra Nevada to Utah's Wasatch Mountains.

Lehman Caves is a single cavern despite its name. It extends a quarter mile into the limestone and marble that flank the base of the Snake Range. American Indians knew of it long before the rancher and miner Absalom Lehman explored it in 1885.

The Silver Jack Inn & LectroLux Cafe

Due to plumbing issues 4 riders are staying at another hotel, the Whispering Elms Motel in Baker, NV. The rest of us are staying at the Silver Jack Inn & LectroLux Cafe which is located 5 miles off of US 50 at the base of Mt. Wheeler (13,063') near Great Basin National Park and the home of Lehman Caves.

The hotel has been here since 1949 and the LectroLux Cafe is housed in 1905 mining grocery store. Some of the glass and most of the lumber is original. When the mine closed in 1913 the building was moved to Baker. It overlooks Snake Valley, one of the most remote and pristine places in the country.

6/3/2014 - Eureka, NV to Ely, NV

77 Miles

Today was another long climbing day with no services between Eureka, NV and Ely, NV. The riders left early -- right after breakfast around 6:00 a.m.

I had two riders in the truck today...both feeling a wee bit under the weather...I'm sure the altitude is not helping.

I let the two riders off at the top of Little Antelope Summit and they started riding down a beautiful downhill before attacking the next climb.

Downhills, you gotta love 'em!

We don't get these big animals in Florida!

So far on this trip I have seen a bear (he was golden colored and big) loping up the embankment along I-80 near Donner Lake, CA, jackrabbits, chipmunks and snakes. Maybe I will get a chance to see an elk or something along the way.

We are still following the Pony Express Trail

This lone tree was atop Little Antelope Summit.

We are staying at the Best Western Park Vue Motel in Ely, NV.

I have Happy Hpur duties with Richard C. tonight.

6/2/2014 - Austin, NV to Eureka, NV

77 miles

It was another early morning for the riders as the horde was at the door of the International Cafe across the street from the Lincoln Motel at 5:55 a.m.

Saw some beautiful horses along the route

Beautiful scenery

Drilling history of the Eureka area

It was a long day with some head winds as well as cross winds however everyone made it.

We had ice cream at Happy Hour....it seemed to be a big hit...it was. Very subdued meeting...I think everyone is feeling the effects of several long climbing routes....and tomorrow is no different.

We are staying at the Gold Country Inn (used to be a Best Western). It is very nice and the rooms a big.

Tomorrow we are off to Ely, NV.

June 1, 2014 - Middlegate Station, NV to Austin, NV

63 miles

The day started off a little chilly, however once the sun completely rose, it was a beautiful day for a bike ride.

It was a day of no services, so I trolled the route making sure all the riders had enough water. The scenery was/is gorgeous, but there is no civilization for as far as the eye can see.

Very 'Breaking Bad'....was a comment made about our accommodations last night in Middlegate Station and I have to say it is a very fitting description.

I passed numerous historical signs on the route today. It was very interesting...the impact of the Pony Express, mining and farming.

Rich suffered a flat even before he left Cold Springs Station.

The Brits have introduced us to some new words that I think will fit in quite well in our normal vocabulary...the first is Whinging and the second is Yob. To Whing is to whine or complain and a Yob is a hooligan or a lout. I am sure I can use these words very successfully in daily conversation.

We are staying at the Lincoln Motel in Austin, NV. It is old, but more than adequate.

I had lunch at the International Cafe, just across the street from the hotel.

Tomorrow we are off to Eureka, NV.
