2016 Epic Road Trip - Day 63

July 15, 2016

Talkeetna, AK

Day 63

Took a Jet Boat Tour 65 miles up the Susitna River to Devil's Canyon. It was a very wonderful day on the water. The weather cooperated and for the 3rd day in a row, Mt. Denali was visible in all her glory. In fact all 3 of the highest peaks of the Alaska Range were visible. The boat tour took us past a lot of history of the area including the town site of Curry, where the railroad had built a 75 room hotel with running hot and cold water. The town is no longer there, but there are remnants of the site that can still be seen.

We saw eagles, salmon rolling and 2 black bears along the journey. We stopped for a hike along the river and the naturalist talked to us about a trappers cabin we saw, and about a replica fishing camp that was there as well. Devils Canyon is Class 4 and Class 5 rapids that only a few of the best kayakers ever attempt.
