7/6/2014 - Mt. Vernon, KS to Marshfield, MO

55 miles

The weather was overcast as the riders left the hotel this morning.

On the way I stopped at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, Republic, MO. This battle in 1861 opened the Civil War in Missouri. For the next 3 1/2 years, the state saw fierce fighting, mostly guerrilla warfare, with bands of mounted raiders destroying anything military or civilian that could aid the enemy. The Confederates made many attempts to break the Federal hold on Missouri, two of them directed by Maj. gen Sterling Price.

The World's Largest Fork, Springfield, MO

The riders rode on Historic Route 66 for a good ten miles today, albeit in the wrong direction...

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express, Marshfield, MO.

Tomorrow we are off to ....
